Pending New History Book

I have embarked on additional research into a new history book, with a completion date sometime in 2019. The book looks at the life and times of William “Pirate Bill” Johnston. Johnston was a larger-than-life character, who ruled the Thousand Islands of the St. Lawrence for more than half of the 19th century. Famous and infamous men and women trailed in his wake.

He was a folk hero to many Americans and Canadian colonists—a pioneer’s son, a smuggler, a rebel, and a War of 1812 spy. To the colonial British, he was for a time the bin Laden of the day. They spent a fortune one summer seeking him out, but he stayed one step ahead—and kept his neck from the noose.

I have written material on Johnston before. That includes a history book for the History Press, now Arcadia, Patriot War along the Canada-New York Border. Johnston appears in the book due to his heavy involvement in the Patriot War. I also maintain a history blog on Johnston. The articles there will form the core of the book. My latest research will add details and stories to the book not on the blog and not in print anywhere.

I also will correct mistakes in the historical record--there are many--and explain why they are wrong.

I am still looking for a publisher but am optimistic.
